The Raleigh-Cary metro grew 10.2 percent from 2020 to about 1.6 million people, according to Census estimates reported by Axios, while the country grew 2.6 percent. The wider Raleigh-Durham-Cary area passed 2.37 million in the 2023 estimate. Cary alone went from 135,234 residents in 2010 to 174,721 in 2020. That growth shows up as subdivisions off NC 55 and US 1, rooftops along the I-540 loop, and homeowners who arrived without a plumber, roofer or HVAC company saved in their phone. Whoever answers first tends to become that company.
Demand here leans on salaried, schedule-driven households. Research Triangle Park, described as the largest research park in the United States, sits between Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. The State of North Carolina employs 24,083 people in Raleigh, Duke and its health system employ about 39,000 in Durham, and SAS Institute is the top employer in Cary. Customers like these research a contractor on a lunch break and expect a price by evening. A firm still returning voicemails the next morning hands the job to whoever texted back before dinner.
