Two big projects are reshaping the local economy. The Catawba Two Kings introductory casino opened in May 2026, replacing the temporary hall that had run since 2021, with about 600 people hired so far. The full $1 billion resort, including a 24-story hotel, is projected for spring 2027 and expected to employ more than 2,000. Albemarle runs an advanced lithium site with a research center here and has proposed reopening the hard rock mine that operated from the 1930s into the 1990s. Dixon Ridge, a 384 acre project, includes flex warehouses aimed at casino vendors.
The city is building ahead of the demand. An $83 million sewer project will rebuild and expand the treatment plant, and a $13 million electric expansion adds a new substation delivery point. D.R. Horton is selling Brinkley Ridge, a 150 lot subdivision priced from the mid $300,000s, and Lacey Orchard is adding about 400 townhomes and single-family houses on US 74 Business. Another 140 homes on the north side target Charlotte commuters. Moss Lake, the city's reservoir, adds 57 miles of shoreline. For a local crew, all of this means new-home, commercial and lake work in one small city.
